Last night’s storm has badly affected the recently inaugurated Atal Vihari Vajpayee Stadium at HSR Layout.
The canopy of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium collapsed last night, injuring a passerby. He is currently admitted at Narayana Hospital. Damage in the stadium worth Rs 25 lakh is estimated.
The roofing and structural metal frames of the gallery collapsed last night. Shashikumar, a security guard working at the stadium, said, “People were playing as usual, till 5 PM it was normal rain. People went inside because of it. Around 6:30 PM the strong winds started blowing and the board of the stadium fell down along with the canopy. One person got injured on his forehead and nose.”
Nearly 150 trees fell down in the locality. The weather department stated that the highest wind speed was recorded at 61 Kmph. Sunil Reddy, a resident, said, “I’ve been personally victimized, my car was also pushed away upto 4 ft. The NDRF Team said that it is the first time that they have seen this kind of wind in the locality.”
It is decided that that the repair work will be done using money from MLA fund, without involving the BBMP. Satish Reddy, MLA of Bommanahalli Ward, said, “We have directed the contractor for the repair of the stencil fabric what they had done previously. The commissioner has also instructed them to reconstruct the stencil fabric. It will be checked by the superintendent engineers at BBMP.”
This incident will however not impact the regular events at the stadium. The Meteorological Department ( MET) said that thunderstorms and rains are also going to affect Karnataka for the next three days with warnings of gusty winds.
